On behalf of Lubbock Masonic Lodge No. 1392, it was a profound honor this February to present the Community Builder Award to an organization that defines the spirit of service: Buckner Children and Family Services.

The award was accepted by Mrs. Christie Moreno, Executive Director of Buckner’s Lubbock operations.

A Legacy of Faith and Works

The history of Buckner is deeply intertwined with Texas history—and, as it turns out, Masonic history. Founded in 1877 by R.C. Buckner, the organization began with just $27 collected under an oak tree in Paris, Texas.

While researching Bro. Buckner’s life, I discovered he was an “enthusiastic Mason and member of Hella Shrine.” His impact was so significant that in 1921, the Grand Lodge of Texas granted a charter for R.C. Buckner Lodge No. 1176, located right at the Buckner Orphans Home in Dallas.

Serving Lubbock Today

Under Mrs. Moreno’s leadership, Buckner operates five life-changing programs in our community:

  • Family Pathways: Support for single mothers pursuing college degrees.
  • Family Hope Center: A beacon of resources, classes, and parenting support.
  • Texas Home Visiting: Guidance for families from pregnancy through early childhood.
  • Foster Care and Adoption: Providing safe, loving homes for children in need.
  • FYI Transition Services: Equipping young adults aging out of foster care for independent success.

A Family Tradition of Service

The evening held a special personal connection for our Lodge. Mrs. Moreno’s father, Brother Larry K. Parker, is a Master Mason with over 55 years of faithful service at Mackenzie Lodge No. 1327. It is clear that the dedication to building a better world runs deep in their family.

These programs don’t make headlines. They don’t seek attention. But they change lives—one family, one child, one individual at a time. That is the essence of the Community Builder Award.

We are proud to support Buckner’s continued mission with a financial donation and this well-deserved recognition. Thank you, Mrs. Moreno, and the entire Buckner team, for building a stronger Lubbock. Lubbock Lodge hopes that this continues to be a long standing relationship.

The brethren had a little fun with the Worshipful Master, AKA “PawPaw”. They wanted to ensure his blood sugar stays steady so they provided him with a few “Hard Candies” as a surprise. (See the photos)

Honoring Buckner Children and Family Services: 2026 Community Builder Award

James A. Clark

For James, the journey of Masonry—which began in May 2000 at Clinton Lodge No. 23—is about more than just titles. Currently active in Lubbock Lodge No. 1392, Wolfforth-Frenship Lodge No. 1447, and various York and Scottish Rite bodies, he sees these affiliations as avenues for deep Masonic education. James advocates for a Craft where the bonds of the dining hall are supported by a dedication to our ancient truths. His mission within the District 93 MWSA and beyond is to harmonize social ties with reflection, moving the brotherhood from rote memorization toward the genuine pursuit of light.
